WINDOW SHOPPING
The storefront as a conceptual entity embodies multitudes of the personal and commercial; the owner's innate want for self-expression in combination with the need to entice customers. Store owners make conscious, deliberate choices for the storefront which speaks volumes to that individual's personality and priorities. But in some instances, the business is abandoned, which begs the question: if the owner left things behind, do they no longer value those things once front-and-center of the store? Why leave something once thought essential?
Traveling throughout the Lowcountry and Midlands of South Carolina, I look for these unique belongings shown in the glass - physical embodiments of that individual, unique mental landscape - and utilize reflections from the storefront's glass to combine elements of foreground and background, representing that duality of personal and commercial and forcing the viewer to truly analyze and call into question the nature of the objects shown. To further this analyzation, I detract all color from the images, which otherwise would have been a helpful tool in establishing those foreground and background relationships.
